For decades, Outokumpu’s immense warehouses relied on manual scanning, primarily using barcode labels, for parts and inventory identification. While functional, this approach proved increasingly inefficient for an operation of such scale and complexity. Manual processes were slow, error-prone, and provided only batch-level data, limiting real-time visibility crucial for modern digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 initiatives. This lack of immediate, accurate information led to wasted work time searching for materials, delays in production planning, and an inability to fully optimize material flow across their extensive facilities.
By replacing manual processes with RFID automation, Outokumpu achieved unparalleled visibility and control over its massive inventory. This transformation ensures that materials are always in the right place at the right time, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency across their entire operation.
Outokumpu implemented a comprehensive RFID inventory management system from Turck Vilant Systems, creating a digital twin of their physical inventory and operations.
Digital Identity at Entry: As goods arrive at the facility, each product receives a unique RFID tag during the receive and inspect phase. This immediately shifts tracking from SKU-level data to precise, individual item-level visibility.
Automated Put-Away & Location Updates: When items are moved to their dedicated stock locations, RFID applications on forklifts automatically register the correct stock location for each item. This real-time data instantly updates the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Warehouse Management System (WMS), ensuring stock levels are always accurate and current.
Precision Production Planning & Picking: Production planners can reserve needed items for ramp-up, generating accurate pick lists directly from the system. Forklift operators receive these detailed pick lists on their RFID applications, guiding them precisely to the correct item’s location, eliminating search time and errors.
Automated Dispatch & Consumption: Once parts are picked and loaded for dispatch, they pass through RFID gates. The system automatically identifies the items, books them as shipped, and, upon arrival at the production facility, registers them as consumed to their intended project.
Continuous Inventory Accuracy: The entire process ensures error-free inventory levels and item location data are consistently available to all enterprise business systems. Mobile RFID readers allow for quick, accurate inventory checks anytime, anywhere in the warehouse.
