The Helsinki Metro operator, HKL, faced a challenge with their existing WLAN-based positioning system: its resolution was no longer adequate for precise train location. HKL required a more accurate system capable of reporting not only real-time train positions but also train composition, direction, and precise daily and total mileage for each metro wagon. This data was crucial for operational efficiency and for making real-time information available to passengers and third-party developers.
The implementation of RFID for location tracking transformed HKL’s ability to precisely monitor its metro fleet. The system now provides highly accurate, real-time train positioning data, allowing for optimized operations and enhanced passenger information.
HKL thoroughly piloted Turck Vilant Systems’ RFID for location tracking system, ensuring its robustness in both summer and challenging winter conditions (snow and ice). Following a successful pilot, the system was rolled out to all trains and the entire Helsinki metro railway system, including depot maintenance tracks.
